Goals & Challenges for the Rest of 2014
In spite of the unforeseen expenses related to the carjacking , we look forward to:

  • Buying more textbooks
  • Acquiring locally built playground equipment
  • Laying the groundwork for bringing electricity into the school
  • Continuing to provide meals to village children when their families can’t. Some village students receive up to three meals a day at Star of Hope. You can’t learn on an empty stomach.

Spring 2014 Newsletter

Note from Dana: Leonard wrote to me that the kids were very happy when “Daddy” finally came back to the Centre. He assured them that he was all right and was working on a version of the carjacking, making it a “bold and victorious story.” (Sorry about the misspelling in the cartoon)

Thank you!
We look forward to seeing you at the July 12 dance benefiting Star of Hope. Please know, a very real difference is being made in the lives of the kids, staff, and the village, thanks to YOU.
Sincerely,

Kenyan Team
Leonard Muyelele, Gladwell Sempele, all the teachers, staff and kids of Star of Hope!

Save the Date for a kick-ass evening of great food, music, dancing, fun and, most importantly, supporting the kids of Star of Hope.
Dance. Dance. Dance! A simple theme, but one that’s easy to get behind. The evening starts with a short dance lesson, and then dance your socks off to live music from the rockin’ Bouchards.

During the band’s break, we’ll update you on Star of Hope happenings and have a VERY short and entertaining auction to support this wonderful school in Kenya, then back to the dance floor!

Don’t feel like dancing?  Need a rest? Enjoy rooftop dining with fabulous cuisine, sip beverages, adult and otherwise, chat and watch the sun set over Lake Union.

We put the FUN in fundraiser!

Carjacking! Oh no! Happy Ending? Yes!
As you probably know, Leonard miraculously survived a scary carjacking -- unfortunately the SoH car did not. Your quick response to this event raised about $7,000 and Star of Hope is the proud new owner of a 2004 Toyota Corolla Fielder -- new by Kenya standards AND eligible for insurance! Your generosity is beyond words, thank YOU!

Letter from Leonard

May I take this opportunity on my behalf, my family and the kids of Star of Hope, to thank all the great people, big and small that responded to our cry for help following the loss of the vehicle on the 28th of February. I could never have known how quickly people would respond to such an unfortunate set back, but to look back, am very grateful that through this I also witnessed the in-depth beauty of humanity responding to a desperate need occasioned by unfortunate incidence.

The car is in excellent working condition and I am back on the road again to serve the kids at Star of Hope and the community in our neighbourhood. Thanks a million for such a swift response to my distress.

Forever indebted to your generosity!

2013 Growth Spurts
2013 was a great year for the growth of Star of Hope. The kitchen is up and running, the second set of classrooms is completed and partially furnished, the kids enjoyed a healthy year and, in addition, each received a new uniform AND an additional outfit as well.
